SSWAA's Commitment to Supporting Students and Families Amid Policy Changes

The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) recognizes the profound impact of recent policy changes on the students, families, and communities we serve. We acknowledge the fear and uncertainty that many are experiencing, particularly those from marginalized and vulnerable populations.

Despite these challenges, school social workers remain steadfast in our commitment to the well-being of all students and their families. Guided by our core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth, relationships, integrity, and competence, we are here to provide unwavering support to those navigating these uncertain times.

School social workers play a critical role in:

  • Providing Mental Health Services and Support: Offering individual and group counseling to address anxiety, stress, and trauma stemming from social and environmental stressors.

  • Connecting Families to Resources: Assisting families in accessing essential services such as housing, healthcare, food security, and legal aid.

  • Fostering Inclusive School Environments: Partnering with educators and administrators to promote culturally responsive practices and a safe, welcoming environment for all students.

  • Advocating for Students' Rights: Amplifying the voices of students and families to ensure their needs are met and their rights are upheld, particularly in the face of systemic barriers.

We encourage our members and colleagues, who may be experiencing the policy changes themselves while supporting families, to utilize national, state, and local resources to better support those impacted by recent changes. SSWAA remains dedicated to working collaboratively with educators, policymakers, and community leaders to promote policies and practices that uphold the dignity and rights of every student and family. We will continue to gather and add resources to share as they become available.

To help us continue to monitor the situation, SSWAA has created a form for school social workers to share their lived experiences with the SSWAA staff and the Board. Together, we will continue to advocate for a more just and equitable society.
