SSWAA's Response to Executive Order
The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) and the SSWAA Practitioners of Color Advisory Committee stand firmly against removing schools and other child-centered areas as designated safe spaces for children and their families. We recognize students and families may experience difficult life circumstances and believe schools must remain environments where every child feels secure. By stripping these protections, this policy change places vulnerable children at significant risk, undermining their ability to learn and thrive.
As an association dedicated to advancing the profession of school social work, we reaffirm our commitment to equity and the well-being of all students. We call for reinstating schools as "sensitive locations" and urge elected officials to prioritize protecting our children. SSWAA supports the efforts of school social workers across the country as they advocate for safe and supportive environments for all students, and we will continue to provide resources, training, and leadership to address the support of students, families, and school communities.
As school social workers, our ethical obligation is to ensure every child's safety, well-being, and dignity. Taking a stand affirms our commitment to protecting our most vulnerable students.
The School Social Work Association of America empowers school social workers and promotes the profession to enhance the social and emotional growth and academic outcomes of all students nationally and globally.
