Need more training on telemental health?

SSWAA is excited to introduce you to Raymond Barret. Raymond Barrett, CEO, LMHC, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor and an expert telemental health consultant/founder of the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI). A master trainer, Raymond has released over 50 high-quality courses for thousands of clinicians and healthcare providers and trained 1,919+ organizations in telehealth.

Raymond will be presenting the first webinar in the SSWAA Fall Webinar Series titled, "Tele-Mental Health in The School Setting Overview Including 5 Tips for Online Engagement."

What brought you to the field of social work?

I’m a licensed professional counselor, but it’s very similar to social work.

I got into the mental health field because I wanted to support people emotionally during significant times in their lives. I wanted them to feel cared for and to recognize how wonderful they are.

I had some family members with mental illness who are deceased now, and I had a lot of compassion for them. I saw that they were not treated very well by healthcare providers who were not sensitive to mental illness. I felt I had an understanding - or compassion - so I entered the field of mental health, first as a hospital chaplain, then as a counselor, and also now as an educator.

What will your webinar presentation be covering?

In this course, we will give an overview of how to provide telemental health services in school settings, and five techniques for engaging students in therapy. Providing mental health services virtually for K-12 schools is likely here to stay, and while school behavioral health staff have already been providing services virtually - some of the legal, ethical, technical, and clinical aspects are still unfamiliar. This course is not intended to cover all of the competencies of telemental health, but to teach providers how to assess their own competency, and to provide them with a broad overview of the competencies of telemental health. Five key tips for online engagement will also be provided.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Legal aspects (5 minutes)

  • Ethical aspects (7 minutes)

  • Privacy law (FIRPA and HIPAA) (8 minutes)

  • How to choose technology (5 minutes)

  • Emergency management planning (4 minutes)

  • The setup of the environment (4 minutes)

  • Preparation of the client (3 minutes)

  • 5 key tips for online engagement (9 minutes)

  • Q&A (15 minutes)

What is your experience with this particular topic?

I've provided telemental health in private practice for more than 15 years, and I've been providing training, and webinars on the topic for eight years. Several of the webinars have been for providers in the K-12 school setting. Through these webinars, I’ve received a lot of experience based on the feedback and insight from clinicians around the country.

What tools or information can attendees expect to walk away from your webinar with?

After completing the webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • List three ethical standards that are specifically related to telemental health.

  • Describe how to prepare a client for a telemental health session.

  • List five online techniques for engaging students.
